Training

Karen is an integrative counsellor and holds an Advanced Diploma in Integrative Counselling and Therapy. Integrative therapy uses a range of approaches to address problems that are troubling you.

Karen has worked as a counsellor at Threshold/BHT Wellbeing Service, and currently works as a volunteer counsellor at MacMillan Cancer Care. She has worked with clients on a range of issues such as bereavement, depression, relationship problems, repetitive patterns, and anxiety. She now helps clients explore the impact of cancer in their lives.

Approach

Karen provides a confidential, non-judgemental space so that your needs are central to the counselling experience. She can help you explore difficult issues and seek to resolve these in a number of ways. Her approach is very adaptable and can include Jungian therapy, Transactional Analysis, and psychodynamic approaches. She brings warmth and a sense of humour to the relationship.

Psychodynamic talking therapy: explores unconscious processes. You may wonder why you keep repeating the same behaviours or have contradictory views about something. Karen can help you explore how the unconscious influences our behaviour without us fully realising how or why.

Dream work

This is influenced by the ideas of Carl Jung.

"Dreams are the guiding words of the soul. Why should I henceforth not love my dreams and not make their riddling images into objects of my daily consideration?" - Carl Jung

We can explore together the symbols contained in a dream. This can be done by ‘free associating’ (stating whatever comes to mind) and having a ‘dialogue’ with characters or objects in the dream.

What to expect in the first session

Karen will ask you about your expectations and what you would like to achieve from counselling. Working with you, Karen will discuss some options and agree a goal to work towards. Short (6-12 weeks) or longer term therapy available.

Karen is a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).
