Training
Jay Beichman is a counsellor and psychotherapist with over 25 years’ experience working with individuals across primary care, voluntary organisations, and private practice. He holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling, as well as an MA and a PhD in Counselling and Psychotherapy.
He is an Accredited Member of the BACP and has trained in a range of approaches, including humanistic therapy, CBT, bereavement counselling, relationship counselling, and primary care counselling.
Alongside his clinical work, he has a particular interest in offering therapy that is flexible, collaborative, and tailored to each individual. His doctoral research at the University of Brighton focused on pluralistic therapy, reflecting this commitment.
Over the years, he has supported clients with anxiety, depression, loss, relationship difficulties, mental health diagnoses, and significant life changes.
Approach
At the heart of Jay's work is a belief that people have an innate capacity for growth, meaning, and change — even when life feels very difficult.
He works in a humanistic, integrative, and pluralistic way. In practice, this means:
He focuses on you as a person, not a label or diagnosis
You work collaboratively with him, shaping therapy around what feels most helpful to you
He draws on different therapeutic approaches when useful, rather than forcing a one-size-fits-all model
For some people, therapy involves looking at past experiences and how they continue to shape the present. For others, it’s more about finding practical ways to cope, make changes, or relate differently to themselves and others. Often, it’s a combination of both.
Anxiety
With over 25 years’ experience, Jay Beichman has supported clients across private practice, Employee Assistance Programmes, and the NHS, where anxiety is one of the most common challenges people face. He offers a flexible, tailored approach, recognising that anxiety affects each person differently and requires more than a one-size-fits-all solution.
Drawing on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Transactional Analysis (TA), Jay helps clients understand the patterns underlying their anxiety and develop practical ways to manage it. He is particularly interested in how longstanding beliefs and “scripts” can fuel anxious thinking, and how gently challenging these can lead not only to reduced anxiety, but to a greater sense of confidence and freedom in everyday life.
Depression
Depression can feel heavy, isolating, and difficult to put into words. Whether it shows up as low mood, loss of motivation, self-criticism, or a sense of disconnection, Jay Beichman offers a supportive space to explore what is happening at your own pace.
With over 25 years’ experience across private practice, Employee Assistance Programmes, and the NHS, Jay works collaboratively with clients to understand the roots of their depression as well as its day-to-day impact. He draws on approaches including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Transactional Analysis (TA) to help identify unhelpful patterns, build self-awareness, and develop more compassionate ways of relating to yourself.
Rather than focusing only on symptoms, Jay aims to support meaningful, lasting change -- helping you reconnect with a sense of purpose, vitality, and possibility in your life.
Relationships
Relationships can be one of the most rewarding -- and most challenging -- parts of life. Difficulties may show up as recurring conflicts, communication breakdowns, feelings of distance, or patterns that seem hard to change. Jay Beichman offers a thoughtful, non-judgemental space to explore these experiences and make sense of what may be happening beneath the surface.
With over 25 years’ experience across private practice, Employee Assistance Programmes, and the NHS, Jay works with individuals to understand how past experiences and relational patterns can shape present-day difficulties. Drawing on approaches including Transactional Analysis (TA) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), he helps clients recognise unhelpful dynamics, develop clearer communication, and build more satisfying and authentic connections.
Whether you are struggling in a current relationship or noticing repeated patterns over time, Jay supports you in finding new ways of relating -- to others and to yourself.
Other information
Sessions offer a calm, confidential space where you can speak openly and be met with care, curiosity, and respect. Jay brings a thoughtful, down-to-earth approach, creating an environment where you can explore things at your own pace.
He may gently challenge assumptions when it feels helpful, but always with the aim of supporting greater understanding, clarity, and choice.
Many people find that having a space to talk honestly -- without pressure or judgement -- is an important first step. From there, therapy can become a place not only to work through difficulties, but to reflect, make sense of your experience, and consider new possibilities.
